Seeing Through My Glasses - Public Observation

Seeing Through My Glasses - Public Observation from leolucas on Vimeo.

Everyone sees the world in different ways and I want to share a glimpse through my glasses with you.

This was a temporary installation with a supersized glasses hanging from the ceiling in the middle of a dark room at eye level, which gave the opportunity to the audience to walk around it.

The feedback was fantastic! Many members of the public asked me why is the inside was sharper than the outside? Some thought it was a hologram before they got closer to the glasses. Others commented the graphics were very good. A a group of interaction design students asked me if we could collaborate in future projects.

My intentions with this project, were to graphically represent a given audio through sound sculptures (these had been created in a 3D software as short loops) and make the imagery to move with the rhythm. My goals were to reassemble them in a DJ and VJ software to make them responsive to the beat with ability to perform in a live installation.

Multiple perceptions are essential part of this project. I do not see well, therefore I wear glasses to correct my vision. I hear well, but music never had been my passion, therefore the combination of sound and images gave me the opportunity to explore projection mapping, learn more about sound and explore how shapes can perform dynamically in an automatised way.

As I projected the moving images onto a supersized glasses, the material projected onto have been carefully chosen in order to demonstrate this “never sharpness” feeling, mimicking the struggles of blurred vision, which most people with poor eyesight knows well, but those with perfect eyesight may never experience.

By having a frontal projection, I discovered that the outside of the glasses is never in perfect focus due to this material specular properties, while the interior of this giant glasses presents an almost sharp image, which also reinforced this sense of different perception. Another point I want to demonstrate within the installation is how I personally observe colours. We all represent colours, shapes and sound in different ways, therefore I also want to share with the audience how I distinguish them.
